BRIDGEPORT -- About 50 members of the Peruvian community celebrated the 189th anniversary of their country's independence with song, dance and food outside City Hall Saturday afternoon.
Mayor Bill Finch declared it Peruvian Day in the Park City as the Peruvian flag was raised above city hall.
"Although it's a small community the Peruvian community is a very active one in the city," said the mayor who added that despite the recent wave of violence the city is still a very safe place to live.
U.S.Rep. Jim Himes addressed the crowd in Spanish ending his remarks by leading the chant, "Viva Peru, viva Peru."
Julio Anorga, master of ceremonies for the event, talked about the importance for Peruvians to participate in city activities.
"We are not only Peruvians but we are Americans," he said.
Following the remarks groups of young children and adults in native Peruvian costumes put on an exhibit of Peruvian dances.
