HARTFORD -- Democratic 4th Congressional District challenger Jim Himes has become one of the few candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives for whom U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., has recorded a radio spot.
The Himes campaign will begin airing the political advertisement immediately, in an attempt to counteract a commercial that U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays has used over the past couple of weeks featuring New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
In the radio ad, presidential candidate Obama urges listeners to support Himes, saying he needs their help in electing him to Congress. He adds that he wants to "change the way Washington does business."
The Himes ad will air on local stations in southwestern Connecticut including WEBE-108, WICC, WNLK, WSTC, and WCGH, according to Michael Sachse, Himes' campaign spokesman. It will also air on some New York stations.
Sachse declined to disclose the price of the campaign advertisement.
"We will put a significant amount of our remaining resources into this," Sachse said.
Chris Healy, Republican State Central Committee chairman, said he doubts that Obama's ad for Himes will move voters this late in the campaign.
"I'm always a little suspicious of more noise on the radio," Healy said in a phone interview.
"It's fine. So what?" Healy asked. "I think people understand Chris Shays' record and value. Barack Obama talking about Jim Himes, whom I doubt he's ever met, it won't draw flies."
