Incumbent says middle class doesn't pay taxes
BRIDGEPORT, CT - Today, at a debate sponsored by the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce, Congressman Christopher Shays made a shocking statement in response to Democratic Candidate Jim Himes' middle class tax cut proposal. Speaking immediately after Himes, Shays said, "It's very difficult to give a tax cut to people who do not pay taxes." Earlier in the debate, Shays had re-affirmed his view that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong." The Himes campaign issued the following statement:
"Chris Shays no longer sees the issues for what they are," said Michael Sachse, Spokesman for the Himes campaign. "Chris Shays keeps asserting that the fundamentals of our economy are strong, even while families are watching their savings dwindle. It is shocking, and frankly alarming, that Chris Shays thinks middle class families don't pay taxes. Chris Shays can't solve problems if he doesn't understand them."
