What we can do, today, about the family separation nightmare:

We've felt it time and again over the past year and a half. After each mass shooting, the devastation in Puerto Rico, the Muslim travel ban, the white supremacist rally in Virginia, our moral bearings compel us to make a difference.

The current crisis, with thousands of children separated from their parents at the border, is no different.

I wrote to you recently about how this breaks my heart, and how this human tragedy is a great moral challenge. But now let's shift gears and talk about what we can do to end it.

Dahlia Lithwick and Margot Schlanger have an extensive article in Slate that outlines many options for giving. It lists many organizations, and you'll want to take a look for yourself.

One of the simplest options is donating to ActBlue, which will spread your donation among many of the groups that are fighting for kids at the border.

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on two anti-immigrant bills on Thursday – one proposed by Rep. Goodlatte, and another proposed by Speaker Ryan. Neither bill addresses the administration's policy of separating families, and neither bill fixes the administration's decision to end DACA.

Your Connecticut Representatives in the House and Senate are already standing with you in opposing this cruel policy, but you can call Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, DHS Secretary Kristjen Nielsen, and the White House, to let them know you demand action to keep families together. Or find their Twitter and Facebook accounts and let them know where you stand.

Over the coming weeks, we will continue to fight against this cruel and unjust policy together. We are a nation of generous spirit, and compassion wins in the end. But it will not happen without our vigilance and action. Thank you for joining with me to do what's right.
