At about 2 a.m. this morning, the House passed the American Rescue Plan with my support. This comprehensive aid bill will save lives, expand and accelerate the vaccination program, put money directly in people’s pockets, extend federal unemployment benefits, provide emergency rental assistance and help reopen our schools.
I am proud to co-sponsor H.R. 1 the For the People Act and H.R. 4 the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in Congress. Both of these bills make it possible for more people to vote and participate in our democracy by strengthening voting rights, addressing voter discrimination, modernizing our voting systems, strengthening ethics rules and increasing election security funding.
The American people cannot afford any more delays. We must take decisive action and pass the American Rescue Plan, and pass it urgently before unemployment benefits expire soon.
Today, the 117th Congress convened for the first time. New and returning members took the oath of office and swore to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. This is the most diverse Congress in history, with the most women serving in history.
I will not miss 2020.
We faced a global pandemic, lost loved ones, and watched our economy crumble. Our national leadership responded with incompetence, self-gratification and grievance. We lost fighters and role models like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, John Lewis and Elijah Cummings.
Tonight, with my support, the House finally passed a bipartisan coronavirus relief package to support struggling families, individuals and businesses. I’m relieved this bill passed before the end of the year. Now it goes to the Senate.
Thank you, and deep gratitude, to every voter who again put their confidence in me to send me to be your representative in Washington. I am humbled by the substantial support and I commit to representing ALL of my constituents.
The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced its endorsement of Jim Himes for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Connecticut’s 4th Congressional District.
